Different manuals describe E5 in slightly different words, so here is the full picture in one place.
Refrigerator wording across manuals
- REF36FDFZXNT: “Freezer frost sensor failure”
- REF36FDFIXNV / IXNB: “Defrost error of freezer room sensor”
- RFD36FZNX / FZNW: “Frosting sensor for freezing fault”
All three describe the same sensor in the freezer, the one connected with frost and defrosting. The two latter manuals add that the refrigerator can still cool and freeze while the code appears, but the owner should contact service so that normal operation continues.
Wine cooler wording
The wine cooler manual puts E5 in the middle zone’s row: “Middle zone in-cabinet probe: open circuit.” Its short-circuit partner is E6. The alarm is the usual set: three tics, a flashing code every ten seconds, and the on/off key to quiet it.
What you can do
- Write down the code and the compartment it refers to.
- Silence the alarm and arrange a repair.
The manuals publish no reset for E5.
Reading your own display
On the 36 inch refrigerator the code appears in the temperature display zone while the panel is locked. On the wine cooler it flashes about every ten seconds. If you only catch it briefly, wait for the next cycle and read it again before you phone, because a misread digit sends everyone down the wrong path.

Model compatibility: Bertazzoni reuses codes across series and model years, so E5 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
