What ER21 means
The touch controls of an induction cooktop sit in the glass, close to where pans are heated. A sensor monitors that control area, called the user interface in Bertazzoni’s manuals. When it detects a temperature above 85 C (185 F), the cooktop goes into protection mode, switches off completely, and shows ER21.
The manual describes how this can happen in simple terms: a hot object has been placed on the interface.
Temperatures to know
| Limit | Value |
|---|---|
| Hob switches off at | above 85 C (185 F) |
| Error disappears when it falls below | 75 C |
Both Bertazzoni manuals that list ER21 use these figures. One passage in them speaks of switching the cooktop back on once the temperature is below 85 C, while the troubleshooting table gives 75 C for the error to disappear. Waiting for the lower number is the safer reading.
Steps
- Remove any hot pan or object from the control area.
- Let the cooktop cool. Do not try to restart it while the glass is hot.
- Once the error is gone, switch the cooktop on again.
The table has a second remedy: check the thermal insulation of the user interface. The manual says to switch off or disconnect the appliance from the power supply and have it serviced by a qualified technician.

Does ER21 mean something is broken?
Not by itself. The manuals describe it as a protection that releases when the temperature drops. If ER21 repeats with nothing hot near the controls, the table also lists a check of the thermal insulation of the user interface.
Cooktop repair and service in San Francisco
For repeated ER21 stops on a Bertazzoni cooktop, call (415) 692-0756. Tell the technician which model you have and whether anything hot was near the controls.
Model compatibility: Bertazzoni reuses codes across series and model years, so ER21 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
