E03 in daily use
Most E03 stories start on a weeknight. Pasta water on the back right, a sauté pan in front, a sauce simmering at the side, and then every zone goes dark together. The display shows E03 and the cooktop will not respond for several minutes. After it rests, one or two zones work and everything is fine until the next busy meal. A fault that follows total load, not one zone, is a different search than a single failing element. Cooks often cannot tell a stop caused by the number of zones from one caused by long use, so note which of the two seemed to matter.
Older kitchens in the Bay Area sometimes have a cooktop circuit that was upgraded in pieces over the years. If your home has had remodel work, mention it, because that history helps locate where the weak link might be.
While you wait for a visit, plan meals around two or three zones at a time. This is only a workaround, and it also gives us a clean comparison: if the cooktop behaves with less load and fails with more, the technician has a repeatable test to run on arrival.
Checks that are safe for an owner
- Count how many zones were on when it happened and see whether two or three zones run without trouble.
- Check that the cooktop breaker is firmly seated, and glance at whether anything else shares that kitchen circuit.
- Let the cooktop stay off for fifteen minutes before testing so you can tell a heat-related stop from an electrical one.
Meaning of the code
E03 is not a code we can define the same way for every Bertazzoni cooktop. Depending on the control generation it may sit among supply and protection messages or among general control messages, and the model number decides which. What the whole-cooktop shutdown tells us is where to start, not what has failed. Protection means the cooktop limits itself when supply or temperature falls outside what it expects, so a shutdown can be that safeguard working rather than a failed part.
Inside checks start with
Whole-cooktop shutdowns under combined load send us to the shared parts first: the incoming supply and its terminal connections, the main board that divides power among zones, and the cooling arrangement. A single heating zone is the last place to look when every zone stops at once.
Technician or not
If the shutdown repeats whenever three or more zones run, book a visit instead of working around it with fewer pans. The load path involves line-voltage connections inside the unit that can run warm when a terminal has loosened over time, and that is something only a technician should open and measure. The diagnosis compares supply voltage at rest and under load.
Frequently asked questions
A protective stop can reset once conditions ease, so the cooktop works again. The rest does not remove the cause, which returns under the same load.
Often, yes, and that is useful information. It still needs a visit to find out why the full load is not handled.
Not necessarily. If the breaker trips, stop using the cooktop and tell us, since that changes how urgent the visit is.
Model compatibility: Bertazzoni reuses codes across series and model years, so E03 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
