E40 on the display
Most codes are inconveniences. This one comes with a warning attached when it accompanies a burning smell, a brown or dark patch on the glass, a crackling sound, or heat at a zone with nothing on it. The code itself may appear and vanish, but the physical signs are what matter, and they should end cooking on that cooktop until it has been examined.
Why the exact model matters
No single definition of E40 is confirmed for every Bertazzoni cooktop, so we do not name the failed part. What we do take seriously is the combination of any code with heat, smell or marks, since that suggests an electrical or thermal cause that needs a careful look. A code on its own may be minor, but heat at an empty zone cannot be explained by cookware, which is why that sign carries more weight.
Assemblies looked at first
Terminals and connections that carry the load come first, since a loose one can overheat. Then the wiring insulation near hot parts, the heating element or coil and the board are inspected, along with the glass for cracks that let liquid in.
Safe checks from the outside
- Switch the cooktop off at its breaker and leave it off.
- Open a window and keep the area clear, and do not touch the glass until it is cool.
- Photograph any marks on the glass and note what you smelled and when.
When it becomes a technician job
This is a technician job with priority, and nothing here is for an owner to open. If you see smoke, flames, or the smell is strong, leave the kitchen and call emergency services. If you smell gas on a gas model, leave and call the gas utility. We diagnose first and put a written estimate in front of you before anything is replaced.
A detail worth knowing
A faint smell the first time you use a new cooktop is usually protective coatings burning off. A strong or repeated smell is different. The difference to note is whether the smell fades within the first uses or returns every time the zone is on.
Do not try to clean a scorched patch off the glass while the cooktop is powered. Leave it off, and keep a towel or board away from it. Any pan with food that burned onto the glass should be removed once everything is cool, so that the glass can be inspected clearly. Keep children and pets out of the kitchen until the cooktop has been looked at, and avoid placing anything on or near the glass in the meantime.
Frequently asked questions
Not when a burning smell or a scorched mark is present. Switch the cooktop off at the breaker.
Smoke, flames or a strong smell mean leave and call emergency services.
The model number, where the smell or mark is, when it began and whether any breaker tripped.
Model compatibility: Bertazzoni reuses codes across series and model years, so E40 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
