What you will notice
This is one of the more puzzling presentations. The panel accepts your touch, the level indicator moves, and nothing warms up. There is no click, no hum, and often no fan. After a few seconds E17 appears. Owners naturally assume the whole cooktop is dead, but a lit display shows the control side is awake, which narrows the next steps. The display and touch panel need only a small amount of power, whereas each heating zone needs the full supply and its power stage, so the two can fail independently.
Checks you can do yourself
- Check whether any zone heats at all, since a total lack of heat points toward the supply to the power stage.
- Look at the breaker for the cooktop and see whether it is fully on and not half-tripped.
- Check other kitchen outlets and appliances for power, to rule out a house-wide issue.
Where the work starts inside the cooktop
If the control is awake and the heat path is not, the first suspects are the link between the board and the power stage, the power stage itself, and the supply feeding that stage. A partial supply, such as one leg missing, can light a display and still leave the zones dark.
What the code does and does not tell us
E17 has no single confirmed definition across the Bertazzoni cooktop lineup, and the same characters can sit in different tables on different generations. We use the lit-display, no-heat pattern as the lead, together with the model number, instead of reading a meaning into the characters.
Homes that were upgraded from a 120-volt to a 240-volt cooktop circuit by an earlier owner can have a wiring detail that fails at this point. If your house has that history, mention it. A circuit wired differently from what the cooktop expects can feed the display while leaving the zones short of power.
Do not keep switching the cooktop on and off hoping that heat will return. The panel is not the broken part, and repeated attempts only add noise to the picture. Leave it off, note what the display did, and call.
When to book a visit
A missing leg of supply or a failed stage is line-voltage work, and we advise against owner attempts. The visit starts with a measurement at the cooktop’s supply block and moves toward the stage only if the supply is correct. Often the finding is quick, and the estimate is written before work.
Frequently asked questions
The control draws small power and can run on a partial supply. The zones need full power, which may be missing.
A cooktop with a partial supply is worth having checked soon. Stop using it if you notice heat or a burning smell.
Whether any zone heats, whether the breaker is on, and the full model number.
Model compatibility: Bertazzoni reuses codes across series and model years, so E17 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
