How E18 tends to show up
The sequence is common. A spray bottle comes out, the glass gets a generous coat, you wipe and polish, and the next time you cook the cooktop shows E18. Maybe a key behaves oddly, or a zone will not start. Cleaning products can leave a thin film that confuses the touch layer, and liquid can wick toward the edge or under the trim.
Cleaning products with ammonia or heavy fragrance can leave a stronger residue. A simple dish-soap solution is gentler and rinses away well.
Resist the temptation to speed up drying with a hair dryer, a heater or a stove fan directed at the cooktop. Uneven heat can stress the glass, and warm moist air can push water further toward the edge. Patience, a dry cloth and open windows work better. If the code had a companion symptom such as a zone starting by itself, switch the cooktop off at the breaker until we have looked at it.
Reading the code
E18 does not carry one confirmed meaning for every Bertazzoni cooktop, so we do not name a part. The strong timing relative to cleaning is our evidence, and the model number helps us read whether the display generation reports moisture or touch issues with this code. Touch controls respond to small changes across the glass, so a film or a trace of moisture can register as a press that was never made.
First assemblies in line
If the code stays after drying, the first assemblies are the touch sensor layer and its connector, plus the board area close to it, where liquid that crept in can leave a film. The touch sensor layer is the part that registers a fingertip on a key, and it sits close to the glass, which is why moisture near an edge can reach it. Edges and seams around the glass are inspected for entry points.
Outside checks
- Leave the cooktop uncovered and off for several hours so moisture can evaporate.
- Wipe again with a clean, barely damp microfiber cloth to remove cleaner film, then dry.
- Spray cleaner onto the cloth, not onto the glass, from now on.
Why a technician is needed
If E18 remains after a full day of drying and a clean wipe-down, a technician should check for moisture under the glass. We lift and inspect the cooktop, an activity that exposes live parts. Early cleaning of a wet connector is far simpler than replacing a corroded board.
