Water that will not leave
E24 is linked to a drainage condition. The dishwasher expects the water to go down within a set time and it has not. You may notice the pump trying again and again, a tub that still holds water at the end, or a cycle that never quite finishes. The pump pushes water out of the sump through the drain hose, so what matters is whether it runs, runs weakly or stays silent.
Signs to look for
- Repeated attempts to remove water, heard as the pump starting and stopping.
- Standing water in the tub when the cycle ends.
- A sour smell from the filter area.
- The sink gurgling when the dishwasher drains.
Outside checks, in order
- Take out the filter, rinse it and check the recess for a bottle cap, a bone or other debris within reach.
- Look under the sink at the drain hose for a kink or a sagging loop that holds water.
- Run the sink and the disposal, since a clog there will back up into the dishwasher.
- Check that the high loop or air gap is intact.
Scoop standing water out with a cup before running a rinse, so you can see whether it clears the next time.
Cold-weather and grease effects
A drain hose that has stiffened with age can hold a kink more stubbornly in winter, and a disposal outlet lined with grease narrows the passage over months. Clearing both is a common outcome of a simple look, which is why the order of checks matters. A hose kink or a slow sink drain is found by looking, while a worn drain pump or a failed check valve can only be confirmed by testing.
When the checks do not fix it
If the filter, hose and sink are clear and E24 still returns, the drain pump, its wiring, the check valve and the sensing that confirms the water has dropped are what a technician tests. Those parts need the machine open, which makes them a professional job.
The model number helps pick the right specification for testing, and the date of the first code helps too. Appearing on every cycle versus only after greasy loads is a useful difference. You receive a written estimate after diagnosis, and nothing is replaced without your approval. See Error Codes for other dishwasher codes.
What to have noted
How much water stays behind, whether the pump runs or is silent, and whether the code arrives during the drain after the wash or after the final rinse are all worth writing down. A short phone video of the pump sound is even better, and it can be shared at booking.
Frequently asked questions
Often it starts there, but a pump or sensor issue can look the same, which is why checks come first and testing second.
Better not to. Remove the water and let the technician see what happens on a fresh rinse.
It will not reach the blockage. Cleaning the accessible parts is more effective.
Then the plumbing is a likely contributor, and clearing it may solve the code.
Model compatibility: Bertazzoni reuses codes across series and model years, so E24 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
