Heat is the issue, not the beans
When E02 appears, the machine is reporting a problem on the heating side. That can mean it never reached the temperature it wanted, or reached it too slowly, or lost it mid-brew. Nothing about the grinder or the beans is implied.
A heating element or thermoblock warms the water, and a probe tells the control when the target is reached, so either side can trigger the message.
Signs that come with it
The most common complaint is coffee that is warm instead of hot. Some owners notice the warm-up screen lasting much longer than it used to. Others find the machine stops partway through a cup and shows the code instead of finishing. A cup that starts hot and ends lukewarm suggests the heater loses ground during the brew.
- Cups that cool off in the first minute
- A warm-up that never seems to finish
- Steam or hot water that feels weak
- The code returning after a short idle period
A cold-kitchen scenario
Older Bay Area homes with unheated back kitchens, or a machine sitting near a drafty window, make a marginal heater look worse in winter mornings. If E02 only appears when the room is cold and clears by afternoon, mention that. It narrows things, though it does not excuse a heater that is already struggling. Steam or hot-water output feeling weak at the same time tells us the heating side is involved.
Which assemblies are checked first
The technician looks at the heating element or thermoblock, the temperature probe that reports back to the control, and the wiring between them. A probe that reads wrong can make a healthy heater look faulty, and the reverse is also possible. That is why a thermometer reading at the spout is compared with what the control believes. A mismatch between the two points toward the probe or the board rather than the element itself.
Safe checks before you call
- Plug the machine directly into a wall outlet rather than a power strip or an extension cord.
- Make sure the outlet is live by testing it with a lamp.
- Fill the tank with cool, fresh water and seat it firmly.
- Switch off, wait a few minutes, and switch on once. Note whether the code returns at the same stage.
When to schedule service
If E02 comes back after those steps, stop brewing. Running a machine that cannot heat properly can stress the pump and force water through at the wrong temperature. Heater and probe testing requires opening the housing, which is a job for a technician. The visit starts with diagnosis, a written estimate follows, and no part goes in without your approval.
Frequently asked questions
The heating side is not reaching or holding its target temperature. Whether that is the heater, a probe or wiring is decided by testing.
A cold room can expose a heater that is already marginal. It rarely causes the code on its own.
Not repeatedly. If the machine cannot heat as expected, further brewing adds stress without delivering a proper cup.
Yes. A heating appliance on a weak strip can lose voltage under load, so a direct wall outlet is the better test.
Model compatibility: Bertazzoni reuses codes across series and model years, so E02 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
