Water is not arriving as expected
The E04 code indicates a water-intake or supply problem. The machine asked for water and either did not receive enough or did not see it arrive in the expected way. That is a narrower story than a heating fault, which makes the outside checks more useful here. The tank, its valve and the water path leading to the pump are the parts that decide whether water arrives.
After you refill the tank
The single most common trigger is a tank that looks full but is not sitting properly on its connection. A tank pushed on a few millimeters off, or one with a tilted float, can hide the fact that water is not flowing. If E04 appeared right after a refill, start there.
After a new filter cartridge
A fresh cartridge needs to be flushed according to your manual. Air trapped in it can interrupt the first brews and produce this message. Owners often panic because the cartridge is new, but air is a normal explanation. A first brew that pauses or sputters is more consistent with air than with a failed pump.
After moving the machine
In small older San Francisco kitchens, machines get shifted between corners when cabinets are cleaned or a remodel is underway. Tilting the machine to slide it can disturb water in the lines and the tank seating. Give it a minute level on the counter and try again.
Parts the technician checks first
- The tank valve and its seal
- The inlet screen where water leaves the tank
- The pump and its suction path
- The level sensing that tells the control the tank is present
Simple checks from outside
- Lift the tank off, rinse it, fill it with fresh water and press it back on until it stops.
- Look for chips of old gasket or debris at the base of the tank.
- Check any filter cartridge is clicked fully into place.
- Run a rinse and listen: a pump that whirs without moving water sounds different from a normal brew.
When it is a repair job
If a clean, correctly seated tank still produces E04, the problem sits inside: a blocked inlet, a worn pump or a failed level sensor. These need the housing opened and flow measured. The level sensing is what tells the control a tank is present and has water, so a faulty reading can look like a supply problem. Diagnosis comes first, you receive a written estimate, and nothing is replaced without your approval.
Frequently asked questions
A tank that is not seated fully can look fine yet fail to deliver water or be detected by the control. Reseating it is the first step.
It can. Air inside a new cartridge interrupts early brews, so flush it as your manual instructs.
A cracked tank usually leaks visibly. If you see water around the base, stop using the machine and have it checked.
A seating problem tends to clear when you reseat the tank. A pump problem keeps returning and may sound strained.
Model compatibility: Bertazzoni reuses codes across series and model years, so E04 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
