Only on small loads
A household of one or two people can easily fall into a rhythm of running the dishwasher with a handful of plates. If E18 only shows up on these light runs, or only on the quick cycle, that pattern says something about when the machine is bothered.
A dishwasher senses how much water it holds, and a small load changes how that water moves around the tub, so the reading can differ from a full one.
What the code can and cannot say
Bertazzoni has no confirmed universal definition of E18 across its dishwashers, so it is not treated as a particular failed part here. The load size is simply evidence. The same code on a full load would point elsewhere, which is why the comparison is useful.
An experiment worth making
Run three cycles over a few days: a normal full load, a half load on the quick setting, and a half load on a normal setting. Write down which ones brought E18. Three data points are enough to see whether load or cycle type matters.
- Code only on quick cycles suggests the short fill or timing is part of it.
- Code only on small loads suggests the water level handling is part of it.
- Code on every cycle means load size is not the explanation.
Things that vary with small loads
Lightly loaded machines splash differently. Lightweight items such as plastic lids can flip upside down and block a spray arm. Dishes placed in the wrong rack can trap water in a bowl that blocks the spray. If something moved during the wash, the mix of splashing and level can change.
Make sure light items are weighed down, and keep the rack position stable.
Plain checks
Confirm that the water valve is open, the filter is clean, and that the dishwasher is level. A machine that leans slightly forward after a floor change reads water level differently. A small bubble level on the door edge settles that quickly. A machine that sits crooked can also leave water pooled at one side of the tub.
When to book
If E18 repeats on any load size after those checks, a technician tests the fill and the sensing next. Share your three test results at booking so the visit starts at the right assembly, and expect a written estimate after diagnosis.
What to report
Give the technician your three test results, plus which cycle names you used. Mention whether the dishwasher was recently moved, since an installation that changed the slope of the tub can alter what the control sees on lighter loads in particular.
If the code appears right at the end, say so. Timing at the end of a cycle points somewhere different from timing during the first fill.
Frequently asked questions
Not harmful, but it uses the same water as a full run. Waiting for a fuller load is more efficient.
It can change how the machine reads water levels, so it is worth checking.
Tell the technician. It narrows down where the timing is tested.
Model compatibility: Bertazzoni reuses codes across series and model years, so E18 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
