Code on arrival
Some codes appear mid-brew. E32 may greet you the moment the machine powers on, before you press anything. Even though the code is model-dependent, that timing tells a story: the problem exists before any drink function has run. Grinding, brewing and steaming are less likely suspects. The grinder, the pump and the steam path have not been asked to do anything yet.
What is active at power-on
At startup the control checks its own supply, reads stored settings, and polls the sensors for tank, tray and container. The display lights, perhaps a short rinse runs. If the code comes up during these checks, power, board, memory or a presence sensor become the leading candidates. A presence sensor simply reports whether the tank, tray or container is in place, and a misaligned one can report the wrong answer.
Ways to separate them
- Does the code appear with the tank removed?
- Does it appear in the same way every time you plug in?
- Does it show after a long rest and also after a short one?
- Does a different wall outlet change anything?
Trying the machine in another outlet for a day is worthwhile, if the cord reaches without strain. Use one wall socket at a time.
Why not just try again
Repeating power-on does not rewrite a failing startup check. It does, however, add wear to relays and the board’s supply. Two careful attempts are plenty. A code that is identical every time points to a steady condition, while one that changes between attempts leans toward a supply or contact issue.
What a technician measures
The incoming voltage, the board’s regulated supplies, the startup communication between board and display, and the states of presence switches are read in turn.
Safe steps for owners
- Unplug the machine and leave it for fifteen minutes.
- Plug into a different wall outlet and power on with the tank in place.
- Remove the tank and tray, then power on again to see whether the code changes.
A burning smell, crackling or a tripped breaker at power-on means leaving the plug out and waiting for service.
Small apartments and shared circuits
In older buildings, a single circuit may serve the whole kitchen. If the fridge compressor or a microwave starts at the same moment you switch on the coffee machine, the voltage may sag. Notice whether anything else was starting when the code appeared.
When to call
A code on arrival that persists after those steps is a diagnosis case. You get the findings explained, a written estimate follows, and parts are fitted only after you approve.
Frequently asked questions
Startup checks run automatically, so a fault in supply, memory or a presence sensor can show at once.
It can. A weak or shared outlet may disturb startup checks, so try a different wall socket.
Yes. If the code changes when the tank or tray is out, a presence sensor is likely involved.
Leave the machine unplugged and arrange service, because that points to an electrical fault.
Model compatibility: Bertazzoni reuses codes across series and model years, so E32 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
