Two very different kinds of burning smell
Ordinary cooking smells come from a splatter on the cavity floor, a leaking casserole, cheese on the element. A sharp, acrid, plastic or fishy electrical smell is not. E31 has no confirmed definition for us to rely on, so the smell is the more useful guide. The smell, its location and how long it lasted tell us more than the code does, since the code alone cannot say what burned.
How to tell them apart
- Food smells fade once the splatter burns off and come from inside the cavity.
- Electrical smells linger after the oven is off and seem to come from the control area or the cabinet.
- Plastic smells may point to a wire, connector or insulating part getting too warm.
- Any visible smoke from the panel or the door frame is a stop sign.
What to do at once
- Switch the oven off at the control and, if you can reach it safely, at the breaker.
- Open a window and keep the door of the oven closed.
- Keep children and pets away and leave the oven alone until it is cold.
Do not pull the oven out, spray water on it or look inside the cabinet. If you see flames, leave the house and call the fire department.
Which assemblies are checked
The wiring and terminals at the elements, the connectors on the board, the relays, the cooling fan and the supply connection. Each can overheat for a different reason, so the inspection starts where the smell was strongest. Heat damage appears as darkened plastic, brittle insulation or a crust of melted material. A technician follows the smell to its source before running the oven again.
When the smell is just food
If the smell was clearly spilled food and went away after cleaning the cavity, E31 may be unrelated. Wipe the cavity when cold, run a short empty bake with the window open and see whether the code appears. If it does, treat it as its own problem. A code that returns after a clean cavity and no smell is a separate question from the smell itself.
Booking
Say plainly that there was a burning smell, where it seemed to come from and how long it lasted. A visit begins with that, because the oven should not be used again until the source is found. The written estimate follows the diagnosis, and no part is replaced without your approval.
Why you should not test it
It is tempting to switch the oven on again to see whether the smell returns. If a wire or connector is overheating, each trial makes the damage worse and raises the risk. Wait for the inspection, and keep the oven switched off in the meantime.
Frequently asked questions
If it is electrical or smoky, switch off and avoid using the oven until it has been examined.
Food smells fade with the burn-off and come from inside the cavity, while electrical odors linger and seem to come from the controls.
If it is safe to reach the panel, yes, and leave it off until a technician has looked.
No; it has no confirmed definition, so the inspection finds the source.
Model compatibility: Bertazzoni reuses codes across series and model years, so E31 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
