Why the room matters
A compressor must reject heat to the air around the cabinet. If that air is hot, dusty or trapped, the compressor labors, the protective logic steps in, and a code appears. For that reason, E17 is one of the friendlier codes: a few changes in the surroundings can remove it. The protective logic exists to stop the compressor from running while it cannot shed heat, so a code under hot conditions is the control doing its job rather than proof of a failed part.
What it feels like
The refrigerator seems warm to the touch on its sides. It runs almost continuously, or it clicks and tries to start without the usual hum. The fresh-food section is a few degrees above normal. In a garage the symptoms worsen at midday as the door-side wall absorbs sun.
Where it commonly appears
- Garage or porch refrigerators during a heat spell.
- Built-in units where the vent above the cabinet has been blocked by a decorative panel.
- Kitchens where the refrigerator now sits beside a newly installed oven.
- Right after a power cut, when the compressor tries to restart against pressure that has not equalized.
Checks for the owner
- Confirm the outlet has power by plugging in a lamp, and check the breaker.
- Vacuum the bottom grille and visible dust from the rear air path.
- Leave the clearances the installation instructions specify at sides, back and top.
- Wait an hour after any outage before judging whether cooling resumes.
What the technician examines
The start components and relay, the electrical supply to the compressor, the fan that cools the condenser area, and the control that commands it. The sealed refrigerant circuit is left alone unless measurements point there, and that part is handled by a qualified technician only. Clicking without starting and a compressor that runs but barely cools are different observations, and each sends the measurements toward different parts.
Next step
If the cabinet clicks without starting, or stays warm after the surroundings are corrected, book a diagnosis. Please do not attempt to open the back cover or touch any electrical components near the compressor.
What to expect from the visit
The technician starts by confirming the supply voltage and the condition of the condenser area, since those are quick to rule out. Only then does the work move to the start parts and the control. You hear what was measured and why, and you approve the written estimate before any component is changed.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. High ambient heat strains the compressor and can set the code.
The compressor may be trying to start. Note the pattern and book a diagnosis.
Yes, plug in a lamp. Low or missing power is an easy cause to rule out.
Yes. Leave the compressor and wiring to a technician.
Model compatibility: Bertazzoni reuses codes across series and model years, so E17 may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
